What is Lifestyle Medicine?

Lifestyle Medicine is a medical specialty that uses therapeutic lifestyle interventions as a primary modality to treat chronic conditions including, but not limited to cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.  Lifestyle Medicine certified clinical are trained to apply evidence-based, whole person prescriptive lifestyle change to treat and, when use intensively, often reverse such conditions.  Applying the six pillars of Lifestyle medicine—a whole food, plant predominant eating pattern, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, positive social connections and avoidance of risky substances—also provides effective prevention for these conditions.

Mid-Life

As we enter our late 30s and beyond, new health challenges often begin to emerge—such as increased aches and pains, gradual weight gain, and rising blood pressure or blood sugar levels. For women, additional considerations like perimenopause and menopause can also come into play.

While these changes are common, they are not inevitable. With the right knowledge and sustainable habits, many of their long-term consequences can be prevented or minimized. Adopting a lifestyle medicine (LM) approach—emphasizing healthy nutrition, regular physical activity, effective stress management, and restorative sleep—can make a powerful difference. In some cases, thoughtful pharmacological management of perimenopausal or menopausal symptoms may also play an important role in supporting overall health and quality of life.

Time to take stock

Using substances such as alcohol or marijuana/other drugs can be a pleasurable part of life. However, sometimes our lives become too centered around this use, and it’s important to step back for both ourselves and our loved ones. In addition to considering the impact of substance use on our lives, reflecting on our family's health history can further motivate us to make positive changes. Facing up to a family history of cancer and cognitive decline is another powerful motivator. Despite recent advances in gene editing, most of us have to live with our genetic predisposition to disease, but we can still modify many risk factors and lower our risks substantially.

New or Looming Diagnosis

Lifestyle Medicine interventions have been shown to prevent, treat, and in some cases even lead to remission or reversal of diabetes, high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea, and high cholesterol. These interventions have also demonstrated benefits in managing other chronic diseases, including improvements in inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, as well as cognitive function.
